Decentralisation is the most overused word in crypto. Every project claims to have it. Very few do. Here is how to evaluate it honestly — and why the trade-offs are what actually matter.

Most projects claim architectural decentralisation (distributed nodes) while maintaining strong political centralisation (a foundation, a company, or a team controls development, treasury, and protocol upgrades). Political decentralisation is far harder to achieve and far rarer than claimed.

Bitcoin chose decentralisation + security. It sacrificed speed (7 TPS base layer) to remain maximally decentralised and secure. This is a deliberate design choice, not a flaw.

1. More decentralisation = fewer catastrophic failure modes. A centralised chain can be shut down by a government, hacked at its central point, or taken over by a malicious actor. A truly decentralised chain removes these risks at the cost of speed and efficiency.
